Computer crash

If your computer is getting older and the environment adds fuel to it in the form of dust, then there is a high probability for system crash. You have to clean your CPU in a regular basis, not just the outside but also inside the cabinet.

If your system crash, just do first aid. A first aid may solve the problem. First aid is nothing but removing all the components from the mother board and putting them back in position after cleaning the dust. Also remove the BIOS battery and place it back to reset the BIOS settings. Do not forgot to change the date in the BIOS settings after this, because windows XP will not boot because of date difference. It could save you some money.

Boot loader

In a dual boot OS having a linux version and windows xp you may be using Gurub boot loader. Formatting the linux partition will remove the Gurub boot loader. you may not be able to boot without the boot menu.

The solution for this is to,

Boot using the windows xp cd and select repair option from the boot screen. There are two places where you will get the repair option. One is before the agreement screen and another is after the agreement screen.

Repair option before the agreement screen provides dos interface, select this and select the windows installation by entering a number and provide the password.

Here use the command: fixmbr

ignore the warning, you should listen to the warning only if you lost the boot screen due to some other reason's.
